Innovator Founder Visa Endorsement Process: Step by Step

Endorsement is the step that makes the Innovator Founder Visa different from most UK visas. Before the Home Office will consider your application, an approved endorsing body has to agree that your business is innovative, viable and scalable. Here is how the whole process fits together.

Step 1: Test your idea

Before writing anything, check your idea honestly against the three tests. Can you name your competitors and say exactly what is new? Do you have the skills and funding? Is there a path to growth and job creation? Weak ideas are cheaper to fix now than after a refusal.

Step 2: Gather evidence

Customer interviews, letters of intent, pilot users, sign-ups and a prototype all strengthen your application. Start collecting them early; they take longer than writing.

Step 3: Write the business plan

The plan is the core of your application. It should map every section to the three tests, cite its market research, and include dated milestones and a three-year forecast with written assumptions.

Step 4: Choose an endorsing body and apply

Only a small number of bodies endorse new applicants, and each has its own application process and fees. The endorsement fee is £1,000 per applicant, plus VAT. This is a good point to involve a regulated immigration adviser or solicitor, who can advise on the application itself.

Step 5: Assessment and interview

The endorsing body assesses your plan and may interview you. Expect detailed questions on your innovation, competitors, numbers and milestones. You must be able to answer them yourself.

Step 6: The decision

If successful, you receive an endorsement letter. If refused, the feedback usually points to which test the plan failed. Address it properly before reapplying rather than resubmitting the same plan.

Step 7: Apply for the visa

With your endorsement letter, you apply to the Home Office, meeting the English language and any personal funds requirements and paying the application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge. You can apply from outside the UK, or switch from most UK visas from inside the UK.

Step 8: Contact points after you arrive

During your visa, the endorsing body checks your progress at contact-point meetings, typically around 12 and 24 months, each with a fee of £500 plus VAT. They compare what you have achieved with the milestones in your plan, which is why realistic milestones matter from the start.
