Many Innovator Founder applicants are already in the UK. International graduates on the Graduate visa are one of the largest groups: they have studied here, understand the UK market and have an idea they want to build. In most cases you can switch to the Innovator Founder Visa from inside the UK without leaving.
Why graduates are well placed
- You can show UK market knowledge first-hand, which strengthens the viability test.
- If you have been on a valid UK visa for 12 months or more, you usually do not need to show personal maintenance funds.
- Your degree, dissertation or university projects can evidence the skills behind the idea.
Plan your timing
Endorsement takes time. Endorsing bodies assess the plan, often hold an interview, and may ask for changes. Start early and give yourself room before your Graduate visa expires. You must apply for the Innovator Founder Visa while your current permission is still valid.
Turning a student idea into an endorsable plan
- Test the innovation claim honestly: list the closest competitors and say exactly what you do that they do not.
- Gather evidence: customer interviews, waitlist sign-ups, letters of intent or pilot users all strengthen viability.
- Build something: a prototype or early product turns an idea on paper into something an assessor can see.
- Write realistic financials: graduates often overestimate year-one revenue. Assessors notice.
- Prepare for the interview: you must be able to explain every number in your plan yourself.
